I have long been fascinated by the way in which we develop our appreciation of specific musical works over time, hearing and perceiving sound in the context of our own life experiences. Today’s programme features works which are capable of very different interpretations, perhaps precisely because they were penned by composer-pianists towards the end of their lives when at the height of their musical powers and inspired – or perhaps drawn - to explore the heights and depths of human emotion. I hope that today’s recital will instill a life-long affinity for these late and last works amongst younger musicians; and that those already very familiar with this extraordinary music will hear something new in it.
